What is WordPress?
In the first post from Sour Mash Internet we provide a brief summary of Wordpress. We look at it’s history, some interesting statistics and a couple of reasons why you might like to give it a try.
In a nut-shell WordPress is a free and open-source content management system based on PHP and MySQL.
Eh!?
Put another way it is probably the easiest and most powerful website content management system (CMS) in existence today.
A little history about WordPress
WordPress was first released in 2003 and started out as a single piece of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing. Since then it has become the largest self-hosted blogging and CMS tool in the world, used on millions of websites and seen by tens of millions of people everyday.

If you have a Worpdress site or think one could be good for your business then you are in excellent company.

- Estimates suggest that WordPress powers about 20% of all the websites in the world.
- Almost 75 Million Sites depend on WordPress.

In terms of the market for Content Management Systems WordPress is streets ahead of anyone else.
- WordPress has over 53%
- Joomla has over 9%
- Drupal has 6%
- Others make up the remaining 30%
Why use WordPress?
When we started building websites a few years ago we built them in good old HTML. But if you don’t have any programming experience then modifying these websites can range from a bit tricky to down-right impossible. As more and more clients were looking for sites they could manage themselves we started looking around to see what would be the best fit. After a couple of dalliances with other content management systems we decided to concentrate and specialise in building websites using WordPress.
Ease of use
If you can use Microsoft Word then you can update the content of your website. Changing text, adding images and even things like adding contact forms can be done with little or no experience of website design.
SEO Friendly
By design WordPress is very Search Engine friendly. It is written using standard compliance code and produces mark-up which is very easy for search engines to read.
Flexibility
While WordPress may have started out as a blogging tool it has developed into far more than that. If you can imagine it WordPress can probably do it. WordPress can handle anything from a blog about cats to a full blown online store … and everything in between.
Is WordPress for me?
